Polly the Trolley: A Rolling Piece of Portage County History

A bright green and yellow Hometown Trolley parked on a paved driveway surrounded by trees and landscaping, with a historic white building in the background. The trolley features arched windows and a front-mounted cow catcher with "Hometown Trolley" branding.

Public transportation has always played a big role in keeping communities connected, and Polly the Trolley, in Portage County, Ohio stands out. Polly has become a local tradition, and the community even celebrates its anniversary every year to recognize Polly's place in the community.

A Look Back at Local transit

100 years ago, the towns Akron, Kent, and Ravenna were connected by an interurban trolley system that provided a reliable way to travel through the communities before personal vehicles became the norm. The tracks were removed many years ago, but PARTA’s "Interurban" route has since taken its name from the historic route.

Polly the Trolley Today

Polly has become a favorite in Portage County - it provides a convenient way to explore historic downtowns, local events, and businesses. The trolley makes an appearance at most community gatherings and continues to serve as a connection to the community's history. Each year, PARTA marks Polly’s anniversary with a celebration, recognizing both the history of trolleys in the region and the role Polly plays in today’s transportation system.
