The Lead Time Nobody Tells You About

Here's something we hear a lot: "I wish someone had told me sooner."

Usually it's about timing. A buyer knows exactly the trolley or bus they want, has the budget lined up, and reaches out — only to find out the vehicle they're picturing won't be ready until well after they needed it. We hate that conversation. So we'd rather have this one instead, before it happens to you.

Why we don't build off a lot

We're not a dealership. There's no row of trolleys sitting on a lot waiting for someone to drive one home. Every vehicle we build starts with a conversation about your route, your riders, and what's going to make people actually want to get on board. Then we build it — by hand, in Crandon, Wisconsin, the same way our family has been doing it for three generations.

That's the good news and the catch, both at once. Building it for you instead of for anyone means it takes time. Depending on the model and how you want it finished, that can mean months between the day we shake on it and the day it shows up ready to roll.

What we don't want to see happen to you

None of this is really about lead time. It's about what happens when that lead time runs into a deadline nobody was watching:

  • A budget cycle closes before the order ever gets placed
  • A season opens — new route, big event, summer crowds — and there's no vehicle to meet it
  • A grant window shuts while the specs are still being figured out

We've watched good plans get squeezed by timing more than once, and it's avoidable every single time — as long as the clock starts running before the deadline, not after.

What getting an early start actually gives you

Coming to us early isn't just about beating a calendar. It usually means:

  • More room to make it truly yours. The earlier we start, the more time there is to get the interior, seating, and finish exactly right — not just whatever's fastest.
  • Peace of mind on the budget. Locking things in before a fiscal year closes means you're not scrambling to re-approve or re-scope later.
  • A vehicle ready when you are — not a gap you're plugging with a rental or an aging spare while you wait.

So when should you reach out?

If you're planning against a fiscal-year budget, don't wait until funding is confirmed to start the conversation — reach out while it's still being worked out. If you're a private operator gearing up for spring or summer, fall and winter are your window, not April.

Honestly, the simplest rule we can give you: if there's a date this vehicle needs to be ready by, that's the date to work backward from. We'll help you figure out the rest.

Let's talk about your timeline

Every fleet is a little different, and so is every timeline. Whether you're thinking about next season, next fiscal year, or something further down the road, the best way to find out where you stand is just to ask us.

We'd love to hear from you.
