How the Coral Gables Trolley Became a Community Asset

Since 2003, the Coral Gables Trolley has provided free transportation to connect residents to Downtown Miami and other areas across southern Florida. Designed to reduce traffic congestion, the trolley system has become a vital part of the community.

When the trolley system launched, it focused on connecting central areas of Coral Gables to Miami. As the city grew, residents in certain neighborhoods began to feel left out. For example, the Mcfarlane Homestead Historic District needed better transit options to connect its residents to downtown and beyond.

To address these concerns, Coral Gables expanded the trolley system to include a route through Durant Avenue. This extension provided direct access to the neighborhood, ensuring residents could reach essential areas like the Douglas MetroRail Station and Downtown Coral Gables. The update included:

  • Improved connectivity: Linking underserved neighborhoods with city hubs.
  • Enhanced accessibility: Providing options for residents with mobility issues.
  • Better commuting options: Reducing reliance on personal vehicles

The new routes had an immediate impact: Residents who couldn’t drive, including seniors and those with disabilities, gained independence and access to more of their community. “My wife and I no longer drive, so having the trolley allows us to stay active in our community,” shared one Coral Gables resident.” Workers and residents also benefited from a reliable, congestion-free option for reaching downtown and metro rail stations.

Additionally, by adding a stop in the McFarlane Homestead Historic District, the city connected this historically significant area to the rest of Coral Gables.

The Coral Gables Trolley shows how thoughtful transit design can solve real-world challenges. By expanding routes and focusing on accessibility, the city created a system that meets the needs of residents while honoring its historic roots.
